Girls win Under 18 Inter-International Schools’ Football Tournament

Our senior Girls’ Football team has not lost a match against another school since 2019 so were hot favourites going into the Under 18 Inter-International Schools’ Football tournament. They soon showed why, scoring 26 goals in their four group games. Stafford kept the score respectable in the final by putting their entire team in defence but our girls still won. Goalkeeper Maleesa Gunasinghe only touched the ball once in five games. Captain Niara Wijayasinghe won the Best Player award after scoring 16 goals in the tournament.

The Under 16 Girls reached the semi-finals after beating Lyceum, Ratnapura 4-0 but were unlucky to lose a match against CIS 2-1. They finished 3 rd after winning the Consolation Final against Stafford International School 1-0. The team’s strength in depth showed the future of Girls’ Football in school is in safe hands.

In October, the senior girls’ team played a match against a touring team from England, St. Edward’s, Cheltenham and won 7-1. Needing a greater challenge to stretch the players, the team entered two adult Futsal tournaments. In the Lotus Trophy, they won three and drew one of their opening matches to qualify for the semi-finals. A goal by Niara took them through to the final, where they were unfortunate to lose 1-0 against a team they had beaten 2-0 in the group stage. In the Kalo Futsal Bash, they reached the final but lost against a team made up of national players.
