Elizabeth Moir School is an independent English-medium international school in Colombo, Sri Lanka. The school is co-educational and admits children from both Sri Lankan and expatriate families.
Elizabeth Moir School is the only international school in Sri Lanka to be owned and run by British nationals. The school was established in 1996 by Elizabeth Moir, the pioneer of international education in Sri Lanka, who has led international schools in Sri Lanka for over forty years. It immediately established itself as one of the top international schools in Colombo and its commitment to small classes, individual attention and an all-round education have ensured it continues to set the standard.
The school moved into new 2 ¼ acre premises on Kirimandala Mawatha in September 2025, providing world-class academic, sporting and performing arts facilities. The central location within the city limits is convenient for families living in any area of Colombo, close to popular apartment complexes and next to two hospitals. The site is double the combined area of our previous Junior and Senior School premises, with five times more indoor space.
Mrs. Elizabeth Moir was awarded an MBE by Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II in 2014 for her services to British education and the teaching of English in Sri Lanka, having set up three leading international schools in Colombo (Colombo International School, The British School in Colombo and Elizabeth Moir School) as well as establishing the Follow Me English Language programme at 80 language centres across the country at the request of the President. As well as being the pioneer of international schools in Sri Lanka, Mrs. Moir has served as Head of School at the three schools she founded for over 40 years. In 2017, she won one of the National Awards for the Advancement of Humanity, Development and Peace, given by the Sarvodaya Trust Fund. In 2023, one of her former students, former Head of Google India Rajan Anandan, set up three scholarships for Master’s students in her name at The Oxford India Centre for Sustainable Development in Somerville College at Oxford University.
