Savani Danangoda-Gamage, Meliza De Silva and Rajindu Normanbhoy organised a project to clear the invasive species Japan Jabara from the Galkulama Tank in Anuradhapura that won the award for the best Community Service project organised by Student Ambassadors at August’s Sri Lanka Model United Nations conference.
The students raised funds by organising stalls at CCC and Goodmarket and holding bake sales in school. With the help of the army, they were then able to clear the Japan Jabara that covered 70% of the 30-acre tank, depleting the fresh water that 270 families relied on and enabling fish farming to resume in the area.
