Moir Win COMBOS Football & Basketball

Moir initiated COMBOS in 2019 to provide competitive matches and tournaments for our sports teams in a more fun and informal setting than the TISSL events, against schools of fairly similar sizes. Although we have half the students of the other three schools that normally take part, this is a more level playing field than TISSL, where some schools have ten times more students. We are delighted that this year there will be competitions in all our main sports for the first time, with each school hosting at least one event.

As well as enjoying the games, our teams have performed brilliantly in every sport. Earlier in the term, our Cricket team finished second in their tournament to Stafford International School and 2 nd in the Swimming, behind CIS.

Futsal was held in five different age groups for both boys and girls. We reached the final in eight out of ten competitions, winning three and losing on penalties in two, and finished 3 rd in the other two. Both our Under-20 Boys’ and Girls’ teams won their tournaments. Our Under-16 Boys were unfortunate to lose in the final on penalties after a disputed decision. In the Under-16 Girls’ tournament, both our A and B teams reached the semi-finals and ended up meeting each other in the consolation final. In the Under-14 Boys’, our A and B teams also met in the consolation final. The Under-14 Girls’ were unfortunate to lose in the final on penalties.

Our Junior School teams played equally well. The Under-12 Girls won their tournament, defeating Stafford 1-0 in the final, after victories over CIS and British in their group matches. The Under-12 Boys won four games without conceding a goal to reach the final, where they were unfortunate to lose by one goal to the same British School team they had beaten 2-0 in the group rounds. The Under-10 Boys were equally unlucky. Having defeated CIS A 2-0 in the group stage, as well as beating Stafford B 4-0 and CIS B 5-0, they lost on penalties to CIS in the final after the game ended 0-0. The U10- Girls also reached the final, having won one of their group matches, against Stafford, 5-0.

We are hosting the Basketball. The Middle and Senior School tournaments will take place next term, providing a final chance for our Upper 6 th players to represent the school. The Junior School tournament was held in November, in our spectacular new indoor Basketball court. Our Girls’ team, led by Captain Saneli Perera, played well but did not qualify for the final, after a narrow one-point loss to CIS. After a nervous first game, the boys reached the final after comfortable victories against CIS (31-4) and Stafford (19-5). They defeated the British School 25-15 in the final to retain the trophy they won last year. Captain Yuvan Embuldeniya and his team should be proud to have won the first tournament in our new court.

We look forward to next term’s Athletics meet too. Having finished 2 nd in the inaugural event last year, we hope to go one better this year.
