Sports

Elizabeth Moir School has a very keen Sports Section at both the Junior and the Senior School. We concentrate mainly on team sports which include Football, Cricket, Basketball, Swimming and Athletics with both boys’ and girl’s squads in both schools for most age groups.

The students are divided into four houses, which compete in all sports at both Junior and Senior Schools throughout the year, giving our sports coaches the opportunity to select students for training for the different squads.

We enter for all the sports fixtures in Athletics, Swimming, Football, Cricket and Basketball organized by TISSL for the 25 International Schools in Colombo. There are also smaller events in all these sports for the four main International Schools and every week there are matches organized for our squads in all the sports.

Over the years we have had students who have qualifies for national Teams in Cricket, Swimming, Rowing and Squash.

Football
Football is one of the most popular sports in the school. We have age group boys’ and girls’ squads in both Junior and Senior Schools. The Under 19 Boys Squad has tasted success in various tournaments, including being the finalist in the Inter International Schools Football Tournament most years and being crowned Champion twice in recent years. We have hosted Super Eight Tournaments between four of the top national school squads, and four of the top international school squads and have reached the final on both occasions. The Under 19 Girls’ Squad has won the Futsal tournament played amongst international schools and the Under 9 boys team has had many successes playing a boys and girls mixed team against another school almost every other week. As well as the squads we have a club at each school for students wishing to practice in order to qualify for one of the squads. Our Under 19 Boys and Under 19 Girls Teams also compete with schools and clubs in Malaysia once a year.
Basketball
Basketball  is also a  popular sport amongst our students. Our Basketball Clubs at both Junior and Senior Schools teach beginners, both boys and girls, the basic skills of the game, and advanced players are invited to one of the Basketball Squads for training. As with Football we have squads for most age groups for boys and for girls throughout both Schools. The Under 19 Boys and Under 19 Girls Squads compete in the Inter International Schools Tournament held once a year for 25 International Schools in Colombo and they also have matches and tournaments once a year in Malaysia. Our younger squads in all age groups also have regular matches with other schools.
Athletics
Athletics is  encouraged throughout the School and we have about fifty students both boys and girls in our Athletics Squad ranging in age from 6 to 18. The Junior and Senior Squads train separately, and then thoroughly enjoy competing together under one banner at the major meet organized for 25 International Schools at the 400 metre track National Sugathadasa Stadium. They are also invited to a four way meet for the full school squads of the main international schools in Colombo.
Cricket
At present we have Cricket only for boys and we have a Boys’ Under 19 Squad and an Under 15 Squad at the Senior School. When Rumesh Ratnayake was our coach our Under 19 Squad were the Champions among 15 international schools at that time. At that time we gave a scholarship to a very talented Cricketer, who had played for the Bahrain National Team at the age of 12,and  who later went on to play for the Sri Lanka Under 19 team. We currently have Under 19 and Under 15 Boys’ Squads who have matches locally and who will start competing in Thailand and Malaysia. With Tillakaratne Dilshan and Lasith Malinga as parents of Junior School children we expect to raise the profile of cricket again in our school. We consider this to be very important, especially as Cricket is a national obsession!
Swimming
Swimming is an another very popular sport. We have swimming lessons throughout the School up to Form 3, and for Beginners who join us in higher classes. The Inter House events are very festive, and at these events students are chosen for the squads. We have over fifty swimmers, in our School Swimming Squad, who all love the opportunity to swim together under the same banner at the big meets at the 50 metre pool at the Sugathadasa National Stadium. To give further opportunity Elizabeth Moir School now organizes a four way meet each year at the new 50m pool at the Air Force Base in Ratmalana. As well as providing keen competition, this event as with so many others, provides the students with the opportunity of meeting their friends from other schools.
